How to Upload an Image

Table of Contents

Objective

This guide explains how to upload an image to Cascade CMS using the red plus (+) Add Content menu and ensure it includes appropriate metadata, making the image search-engine friendly and 508 compliant for persons with disabilities.

When to Use This Process

Use this process when you need to:

  • Upload a new image to your site

  • Replace an existing image

  • Add images for future page updates

Images must be uploaded to the CMS before they can be inserted into pages via a WYSIWYG editor.

Before You Start

  • Confirm you are logged into Cascade CMS.

  • Navigate to the Site Content tree on the left.

  • Select the _assets folder, then the images folder (or a subfolder where you want to store this image).

  • Make sure your image is saved locally on your computer.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Navigate to the correct images folder within your site

Select a folder by hovering over the asset name and clicking on the arrow (>) that appears to the right of the asset name. The contents of that folder will display on the right hand side of the page.

  1. Click the red Add Content button.

  2. Inside the 2 Add Images and Other Assets folder, select Image from the dropdown menu.

4. Drag and drop an image from somewhere on your computer into the browser window, or choose one from your computer. The File Name will automatically populate with the file name previously given to the image. Fill in the Alternative Text.

The File Name should include the image dimensions at the end, e.g. student-center-480x320. This will help when you are inserting the image into a page.

Provide meaningful Alternative Text that describes the image content or purpose. One of the most common uses of Alternative Text is to provide text for visitors who can't see images in their browsers.

All new photos uploaded to the CMS should be in WebP format, which is optimized for web performance, user experience, and SEO. WebP images can be created using Photoshop or other image editing software.

5. Click Preview Draft. After previewing the draft, click Submit to save the image to the CMS.

6. The image has been successfully saved to the CMS. You should now Publish your image.

7. Select one or more of the outputs to Publish to the destinations selected.

Images uploaded to the CMS can be inserted into a page via a WYSIWYG editor by clicking on the Insert/edit Image button.
