Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure:

  • You're using Photoshop 23.2 (Feb 2022) or later. Native WebP support was added starting with this version.

  • If you're using an older version, you can still save as WebP using a plugin (instructions at the end).

Steps for Photoshop 23.2 and Newer

1. Open Your Image

  • Launch Photoshop.

  • Go to File > Open...

  • Select and open the image you want to convert to WebP.

2. Edit or Prepare the Image (Optional)

  • Make any desired edits, resizing, cropping, or adjustments.

  • WebP supports transparency and both lossy and lossless compression.

3. Export as WebP

  • Go to File > Save a Copy...

    • (Do not use "Save As" — WebP won’t appear there in some cases.)

  • In the Save a Copy dialog:

    • Choose your destination folder.

    • From the Format dropdown, select WebP.

    • Click Save.

4. Configure WebP Export Settings

  • A dialog box will appear with the WebP settings:

    • Compression:

      • Choose Lossy.

    • Quality slider (0–100):

      • Higher = better quality, larger file.

      • For web using, a setting of 75 is a good balance.

    • Include XMP Metadata - Unchecked

    • Include EXIF Metadata - Unchecked

    • Include Photoshop Extras - Unchecked

  • Click OK to finalize the save.
