How to Add a Folder

How to Add a Folder

Table of Contents

Objective

This guide explains how to create a new folder in Cascade CMS to organize pages, images, PDFs, and other assets. Folders help structure your site content and are the building blocks for navigation.

When to Use This Process

Use this process when you need to:

  • Organize related content into a new section

  • Group related pages or assets

  • Prepare a location for a new page or set of pages

Folders determine both URL structure and left navigation labels.

Before You Start

  • You must be logged in to Cascade CMS

  • You have already selected the correct site

  • You know the parent folder where the new folder should reside

  • You have a Folder Name and Display Name ready (see naming best practices below)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. In the Site Content tree on the left, click on the folder name where you wish to create the new folder.

Select a folder by hovering over the asset name and clicking on the arrow (>) that appears to the right of the asset name. The contents of that folder will display on the right hand side of the page.

2. Look for a red plus sign in the topmost header area of the page, and click on + Add Content.

3. Inside the 2 Add Images and Other Assets folder, select Default Folder from the dropdown menu.

4. Fill in the Folder Name and Display Name.

The Folder Name will generate the page URL, therefore, it should be all lowercase letters separated by hyphens, without underscores, special characters (e.g. #$%$%^&), or any spaces, e.g. demo.miami.edu/about/board-and-directors, not demo.miami.edu/about_board&directors.

The Display Name will generate the labels for the left navigation, and could include capital letters, special characters, and spaces.

5. Click Submit to finish.

6. Your new folder should be highlighted in the asset tree to the left. Publish the folder.

Naming Conventions and Best Practices

  • Folder Name:

    • All lowercase

    • Use hyphens between words

    • No spaces or special characters (e.g., #, $, %, &)

    • Reflects the URL segment (example: about-us)

  • Display Name:

    • Appears in the left navigation

    • Can include capital letters and spaces

    • Should be descriptive (example: About Us)

Folders should be created where you intend their content to live in both URL and navigation hierarchy.

Success Checklist

Before completing this task, confirm:

New folder appears in the Site Content tree
Folder Name follows naming conventions
Display Name appears correctly in left navigation (if published)
Folder published to the correct destination
